A study was conducted to explore the extent of prenatal care and its related factors
among the women who experienced hospital delivery in 1994. The obstetric department
of a general hospital and a large obstertric hospital in Kwangju, Korea were selected for
the study. The mothers from the selected institutions were surveyed using telephone
and their hospital records were reviewed during December, 1995 and January, 1996. The
survey was conducted by well trained interviewers and supervisors. Among 3,226 total
deliveries, 1,544 cases (47.9%) that were available for the phone survey were used for
the analysis.

1. The mean age of the mothers at the time of the delivery was 28.5¡¾3.71 years old
and the mean age of the primigravida was 26.7¡¾3.08. 52.9% of the mothers were aged
from 25 to 29.
2. 56.5% of the mothers had high school educations, 37.4% college and above
education. 26.4% of the mothers were shown to have occupation outside home.
3. The proportion of the cesarean section was 20.7% and low birth weight (<2500gm)
was 1.9%.
4. The proportion of the first babies (43.4%) and the second (42.7%) were similar. The
proportion of third or higher order was 13.9%. Male babies accounted for 55.2% showing
the sex ratio of 123.4.
5. In feeding type, 47.6% had breast feeding and 43.2% had artificial feeding. Feeding
type was not shown to be related with mother¡¯s age, educational level or baby¡¯s gender.
6. The proportion of regular prenatal care was 68.8%. The rest (31.2%) either not had
any prenatal care or had the care irregularly. Regular prenatal care was shown to be
more prominent among the younger(<30 years old) (72.3%), the more educated (0<
years) (69.8%), and the primigravida(82.5%).
7. 51.8% responded that they knew the gender of the baby before the delivery. It was
significantly related with the gender of the baby (p<.01).
8. The average age of the initiation of weaning was 5.5¡¾2.1 months. The
younger(<30 years old), the more educated (>9 years), and the mothers of the lower
order babies were shown to begin weaning earlier.
